Summer. Sunshine. Fun. And Worshiping God. Some things just go together.

Here's what summer looks like for kids as we worship together at Eagle Church of the Nazarene.

9:30 Building Connections Worship Service

This summer during the 9:30 time on Sunday mornings, we want to encourage all of us being together while we learn together about God.

Ages birth through three years of age will have spiritual care as they play and learn about our great God.

Ages four and up will be able to sit with their parents during the worship service and experience worshiping with others in a corporate setting. (That's corporate as in all together, not corporate as in cubicle.)

Children, teens and adults will have the opportunity to feel connected with each other as we each worship in our own unique way.

For children, they learn through using all of their senses. Maybe not all at exactly the same time, but in different ways and alternating ways.

This means that children may look around while others are singing and learn something new about God by seeing the man behind them raise his hand to worship God. It may mean that they color a page with crayons during the sermon which allows them to use their aural abilities while processing through the kinesthetic of hand eye coordination.

Along these lines, we want to encourage you to come prepared with a bag that will help your kids engage either passively or actively in the worship time together.

What do we bring? Here are some ideas:
Usually a soft toy (not the squeaky kind)
Crayons and paper
Quiet, hard candy
Word puzzles

Kids love to sing. They just might not know the words. Help them engage with the new songs by clapping with them or, in the case of those that can read, encouraging them to try to sing the song.

After the worship service, we want to encourage you to go to Sprout! Read the next column to find out more about it.

~10:45 Deeper: Household Edition

I've been playing with the name now for a couple of weeks. Originally I wanted to call this time what is listed above. However, you will notice the oak sprout picture above. I have settled on this time being called Sprout. Why? Because we all need some help growing to be what God calls us to be. And that is what we will be doing in Sprout. Here's how it works:

Immediately following the 9:30 worship time, somewhere around 10:45, we will move directly into a family time for birth through 5th graders and their parent(s) in the 3rd - 5th grade room. This will be a space for kids and adults to really break down a topic! We will be changing what we are doing about every six minutes. And we have some cool things on the docket!

But to really help everyone interface with the topic, we are asking that, if possible, at least one parent come to Sprout. In case you are wondering what it might look like, here is a sample:

Sticker Match Game to have some fun!
Welcome
Songs
Prayer
Word World
Song
Playtime and Word Universe
WHEE Activities
Wrap Up

We plan for this time to last no more than one hour. And, that's a lot to have in an hour!

Please keep in mind that this is a work in progress and we will be shaping and refining it as the weeks go by.

Lastly, we can't do this with out you! Our goal is to create a time that all ages in the household can grow and interact together with God.

So we hope your family will come Sprout with us!

Did someone say "lunchtime?"
Now that your worship time at church is over, take some time to talk about your and their experience at church today. They may have questions. Do they know what the offering plate is? Do they know what a tithe is? What are the benches at the front for? Why were there people at the altars? Why were they crying? Daddy, why did you go to the altar? Why were you crying?

What great times to teach and explain! Deuteronomy 6:6-9 says this, "The commandments I give you today must be in your hearts. Make sure your children learn them. Talk about them when you are at home. Talk about them when you walk along the road. Speak about them when you go to bed. And speak about them when you get up. Write them down and tie them on your hands as a reminder. Also tie them on your foreheads. Write them on the door frames of your houses. Also write them on your gates."
